Advocacy

The Coalition champions the development and implementation of policies that address the social drivers of health, lower healthcare costs and improve health outcomes.

Lifting our voice in common cause

The Root Cause Coalition brings a unique voice when engaging with leaders and lawmakers. TRCC’s strength lies in a diverse membership that serves communities and individuals across several points along the care continuum. No one interest comes before our common goal of reconstructing a health care system that addresses the social drivers of health to achieve health equity.

To achieve this goal, TRCC has outlined an 8-Point Call to Action to Achieve by 2025. Our Advocacy Committee is deeply involved in developing TRCC’s policy agenda and selecting existing efforts for formal support. All members may join the Advocacy Committee.

Advocacy Engagement Opportunities

TRCC regularly engages in outreach to Congress and the executive branch through letters to the White House and other agencies and meetings with congressional staff and agency officials. TRCC participated in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and co-hosts the Come to the Table Regional Events Series in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Coalition also facilitates regular members-only webinars and discussion groups on a wide range of SDoH issues such women’s health, racial health disparities, climate resilience and gun violence as a public health issue. Each year, TRCC hosts Advocacy Day where members are invited to fly into Washington, D.C. to attend informational panels and meet with their elected officials on Capitol Hill.

Equity Legislation Monitor

The Equity Legislation Monitor (ELM) is a tool developed by the Coalition's Board, Advocacy Committee and Staff to identify priority issues affecting health disparities, and relevant legislation that address them. TRCC uses the ELM to continuously provide relevant information on key equity and SDoH issues throughout the year. This tool is updated with research, news and legislation, released in real-time, providing resources and information on seven priority areas: digital equity; diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice; environment and climate change; housing; maternal health; nutrition and food security; and payment models.

  • The Coalition champions the development and implementation of policies that address the social determinants of health, lower healthcare costs and improve health outcomes.

  • The Coalition’s Equity Legislation Monitor, (ELM), is a tool developed by our organization to identify and track relevant legislation on key equity and SDoH issues introduced in the 118th Congress.

  • The ELM was developed with input from the Coalition's Board, Advocacy Committee and Staff to provide a succinct list of equity-focused bills that will have the broadest and most lasting impact in achieving health equity. This list will be continuously updated, making the ELM a go-to source for the most recent and pertinent legislation related to equity and SDoH issues.

  • TRCC will provide analysis of the bills featured in the ELM, along with its updated status and any related materials shared by Congressional offices to provide the full picture of all each piece of legislation.

  • The ELM focuses on eight priority areas: digital equity; rural health; environment and climate change; housing; maternal health; nutrition and food security; gun violence prevention; and payment models. These topics were chosen because they most align with TRCC’s Mission, each of the Coalition’s Four Corners of Priority, and the priorities of our member organizations.

  • For further information about the ELM, please contact Hannah Miller at hmiller@rootcausecoalition.org.
